Necko Team – Weekly Status Meeting Notes

Date: 2026-06-16
Edition: June
Facilitator: Greg
Next on Triage: Kershaw Jang
Quality Report Coordinators (June): Valentin Gosu / Sunil Mayya

Round Table

Firefox 153 Beta Readiness

  • Firefox 153 entered beta validation phase.

  • Key projects reviewed:

    • Compression Dictionaries

    • Local Network Access (Android)

    • WebTransport

  • Compression Dictionaries are now rolling into beta with monitoring and alerting preparation underway.

  • Project rollout remains healthy with no major concerns reported.

WebTransport Progress

  • Randell reported:

    • 3–4 patches already landed.

    • Roughly 20 patches remain in flight.

    • Waiting for updated neqo import before larger Gecko landing work begins.

  • Plan:

    • Cut a new neqo release after SendGroup and Draft-15 patches land.

    • Continue incremental landing strategy.

  • Current target: Firefox 154.

Compression Dictionaries Rollout

  • Firefox 153 beta rollout beginning.

  • Team preparing:

    • Release notes

    • Alerting expectations

    • Monitoring dashboards

  • Greg asked Randell to coordinate with Deanna regarding expected alert volume during rollout.

  • Text/plain sniffing issue remains under investigation.

DNS Performance & Happy Eyeballs

  • BER reported:

    • Unexpectedly low DNS cache hit rates.

    • DNS lookup regression affecting current measurements.

  • Team agreed:

    • Delay further DoH experiment rollout until DNS regression understood.

    • Capture logs and investigate cache utilization.

  • Happy Eyeballs remains enabled in Nightly but rollout decisions depend on resolving DNS timing issues.

GLAM Label Counter Bug

  • Oskar reported GLAM counters are currently misleading.

  • Root cause:

    • Aggregation normalization causes dual-labeled metrics to be counted incorrectly.
  • GLAM team investigating ETL changes and potential backfill.

  • Recommendation:

    • Introduce metadata marker when aggregation methodology changes.

Team Check-ins

Valentin

  • Cache encryption landed and riding trains.

  • Investigating:

    • StandardURL crashes

    • Priority queue items

    • Compression dictionary text/plain compatibility fix

  • Believes text/plain compatibility cleanup should take only a few days.

Randell

  • Continuing WebTransport landing work.

  • Preparing:

    • Compression Dictionary beta rollout

    • Release notes

    • Alerting validation

  • Continuing WebCompat investigations.

Kershaw

  • API enablement work continuing.

  • Investigating:

    • DNS lookup regression

    • DNS cache usage

    • ECH/DoH interactions.

Max / BER

  • Happy Eyeballs analysis ongoing.

  • Observed DNS timing regressions requiring investigation.

  • Continuing HTTPS RR advocacy and saferroundtrip.com outreach.

Oskar

  • Investigating GLAM metric aggregation bug.

  • Continuing SEARCH / congestion-control experimentation work.
